Hearts and Arts Exhibit – Denver International Airport

Hearts and Arts at DIA

valentine-heartFrom now through April Denver International Airport, the Loveland Museum/Gallery and the Loveland Chamber of Commerce present an exhibition honoring the historic and contemporary hearts and arts of Colorado’s Sweetheart City.

The exhibit is displayed along the walkway from the main terminal to Concourse A. It is before the security screening area and is accessible to all DIA visitors. Instead of stepping on the moving walkway, stroll down memory lane as you pass the cases of antique Valentines and trace the history of Loveland’s Valentine remailing program.

In recent decades Loveland has developed as a world renown art center. Studios, foundries, galleries and International shows support a large community of sculptors. Works displayed at DIA include bronzes by George Lundeen and Fritz White and the distinctive animal Interpretive Realism of Rosetta – all Loveland residents.

loveland-postcardA bonus to current DIA visitors are kiosks with free postcards, take a moment to write a message to your favorite Valentine(s), address the card and place it in the special Valentine drop box. The Denver International Airport’s Art Program will pay the postage and deliver your postcard to the Loveland Post Office to receive the 2009 Loveland cancellations and Valentine cachet.

For further information about the Loveland remailing program see the previous post, The Sweetheart City – Loveland, Colorado.

Mission San Xavier del Bac – Tucson, AZ

Unveiling – Mission San Xavier del Bac

sanxaviermission2008The scaffolding that encased the west tower of the historic mission church came down just in time for Christmas services. Restoration of the tower took five years and over $5 million dollars to complete. Old cement plaster was carefully removed and brick work repaired before refinishing with traditional lime plaster. Original construction began in 1783 – the oldest European-style building in Arizona. A mix of Moorish, Byzantine and late Mexican Renaissance design San Xavier del Bac is acclaimed as the finest example of mission architecture in the United States.

For years visitors have been frustrated trying to capture photos of the Southwestern icon, often referred to as the “White Dove of the Desert.” Photographers better hurry to capture the unblemished glistening white tower. Scaffolding goes up on the east tower in March, its restoration is expected to take three years.21-san-xavier-del-bac1

Located west of I-90, south of Tucson, the mission is open to the public daily from 8 am – 5 pm. There is no fee to visit but contributions to the restoration fund gratefully accepted. A gift shop adjoins the church. When you visit don’t miss the amazing interior and the museum behind the church. A video of the interior restoration merits the viewing time. This is an active parish of the Tohono O’odham, be respectful of worshipers.

Painting Blumenschein’s Garden

michelle-chisman

The artist capturing the summer garden at the Blumenschein House and Museum is Michelle Chrisman. I love her use of vibrant colors. Michelle describes herself as an Impressionist and Expressionist working in oils and loves to paint en plein air. She has been featured in Southwest Art Magazine, in 2005 as an “Artist to Watch” and in June 2008 in a feature article on “Plein Air Painting.”

Michelle lives in the historic village of Ranchos de Taos. She is represented by galleries in New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona. Visit her website to view available works, a schedule of exhibitions, events and workshops.

Blumenschein Home Museum – Taos

Peeking into a Creative Past

Ernest L. Blumenscheinstudio-fireplace1

Two blocks south of Taos Plaza the home of Ernest Blumenschein (1874-1960) preserves a look into the creative life of one of Taos’ most famous artists. A founder of the original Taos Society of Artists, Blumenschein was drawn to the Northern New Mexico region after his first visit in 1898. With wife Mary Greene Blumenschein, an artist  in her own right, and daughter Helen the family purchased the home on Ledoux Street in 1919. Portions of the adobe structure date to 1797.

The interior remains much as it was when the family lived, painted and entertained in the 13-room rambling structure. Entering the kitchen with its ice box, California cooler and combination wood/electric stove sets the stage for a step back in time. One can imagine the list of luminaries who gathered in dining room doorwaysduring the first half of the 20th century. The home is furnished with the family’s original belongings of European and Spanish Colonial style antiques and a lifetime of personal possessions. Walls filled with the family’s art collection include works by other Taos artists, Mary and Helen. Many of Blumenschein’s own works hang in his former studio.

In summer the home’s courtyard fills with colorful blooms. A sky blue bench entices visitors to sit among the hollyhocks and let their mind wander back a few decades. Twenty-first century artists frequently work at easels in courtyard corners, capturing their vision of the Taos landmark.

"Hay There" by Sarah Phippen

Four Castle Rock local artists have their work displayed on banners hanging from downtown light poles. The public voted to select the artworks from among 20 finalists participating in the “Art on the Street” program sponsored by the Town of Castle Rock. During the 2008-09 fall and winter: “Is that you, Deer?” a wood burning by Fritz Anders, Dix Morris’ pastel “Morning has Broken”, an oil painting “Hay There” by Sarah Phippen and Mark C. Williams’ photograph “Crystal River” have been digitally rendered onto the banners.
